# Tips & Best Practices

> Get the most out of KAM Ascend with these tips and best practices

Follow these tips to get the most value from KAM Ascend.

## Evidence Base Best Practices

### Log Achievements as They Happen

Don't wait until review time. Log achievements while the details are fresh:

* Set a weekly reminder to log accomplishments
* Use the Quick Add feature for fast entry
* Draft achievements and complete them later

### Use STAR Format Consistently

Every achievement should follow [STAR format](/features/achievements#star-format-guide):

* **Situation** — Brief context (1-2 sentences)
* **Task** — What you needed to do (1 sentence)
* **Action** — What YOU specifically did (2-3 sentences, most important)
* **Result** — Measurable outcome (1-2 sentences with numbers)

### Be Specific with Numbers

Vague claims are weak. Specific numbers are compelling:

| Weak                           | Strong                                      |
| ------------------------------ | ------------------------------------------- |
| "Increased revenue"            | "Grew account revenue 23% ($500K to $615K)" |
| "Improved client satisfaction" | "Raised NPS from 32 to 67"                  |
| "Led a team"                   | "Led a team of 8 across 3 time zones"       |

### Link Skills to Every Achievement

Build your skill profile by linking skills to each achievement:

* Select 2-5 skills per achievement
* Mix technical and soft skills
* This powers the skill sparklines in Track

## CV Optimizer Best Practices

### Use the Actual Job Description

Copy the full job posting, not a summary. The optimizer needs:

* Full requirements list
* Company context
* Any specific keywords or terminology

### Address Critical Issues First

The gap analysis shows critical issues and quick wins:

* **Critical Issues** — Block ATS passage; fix these first
* **Quick Wins** — Nice to have; do these after critical issues

### Iterate After Changes

After implementing recommendations:

1. Update your CV
2. Run the optimizer again
3. Check if your score improved
4. Repeat until satisfied

### Don't Copy the AI Rewrite Verbatim

The AI-generated CV is a starting point:

* Personalize the language
* Ensure it sounds like you
* Verify all facts are accurate

## AI Coach Best Practices

### Build Evidence Before Coaching

The coach uses your achievements and revenue data:

* Log achievements before starting a session
* Track revenue for financial context
* More data = better coaching

### Save Important Insights

Sessions are ephemeral by default:

* Click "Save Note" for key takeaways
* Saved notes appear in future sessions
* Don't lose valuable insights

### Extract Action Items

During coaching, the AI suggests actions:

* Click "Send to Execute" to track them
* Don't let insights slip away
* Follow up in Execute

### Use the Right Template

Each template activates a different persona. See [AI Coach personas](/features/ai-coach) for the full template-to-persona mapping.

## Revenue Tracking Best Practices

### Track All Revenue Types

Don't just log direct revenue. See [Revenue Types](/features/revenue-tracking#revenue-types-explained) for the full breakdown:

* **Direct Revenue** — You closed it
* **Influenced Revenue** — You influenced it
* **Cost Savings** — You saved money
* **Retention Value** — You prevented churn

All contribute to your impact story.

### Log Quarterly

Review and log revenue each quarter:

* Set a calendar reminder
* Don't try to reconstruct a year later
* Keep it current

### Link to Achievements

Connect revenue to achievements:

* Shows the "how" behind the numbers
* Makes both more compelling
* Powers better CV optimization and business cases

***

## Execute Best Practices

### Review Daily

Check your action list each day:

* Mark completed items
* Update in-progress items
* Check for overdue items

### Use Due Dates

Deadlines create urgency:

* Set realistic due dates
* Don't over-commit
* Snooze if needed, don't ignore

### Maintain Your Streak

The streak counter gamifies consistency:

* Complete at least one action daily
* Small progress compounds
* Build the habit

### Link Actions to Goals

Group actions under goals:

* See the bigger picture
* Track goal progress
* Stay aligned with objectives

***

## OKR Tracker Best Practices

### Start With Company Goals

Ask your manager what KPIs you will be measured on:

* Set those as your objectives
* Align your key results to company targets
* Don't invent goals in isolation

### Write Measurable Key Results

If you cannot put a number on it, it is not a good key result:

* Use specific target values
* Choose clear units (currency, percentage, count)
* Avoid vague outcomes like "improve relationships"

### Link Evidence Weekly

Attach achievements and revenue as they happen:

* Do not wait until end of quarter
* The stronger your evidence, the easier review conversations become
* Use the evidence list to show the "how" behind each number

### Keep It Focused

Three to five key results per objective:

* More than that dilutes focus
* If everything is a priority, nothing is
* Archive completed objectives to stay clean

***

## Interview Simulator Best Practices

### Use the Real Job Description

Paste the full job posting, not a summary:

* The AI reads the description to generate questions
* More context = more realistic questions
* Include company background if available

### Upload the CV You Will Actually Submit

The questions should match what the hiring manager will see:

* Use your current CV, not an old version
* If you optimise your CV with the [CV Optimizer](/features/cv-optimizer), run the simulator afterwards with the new version

### Run It Multiple Times

Each simulation generates different questions:

* Run 2-3 times per role
* Try to improve your score each time
* Focus on areas flagged as weaknesses

### Answer Honestly, Not Perfectly

Type what you would actually say in a real interview:

* The simulator is for finding gaps, not proving you are perfect
* Weak answers in practice mean strong answers in reality
* Act on the feedback before the real interview

### Log Achievements First

The simulator pulls from your evidence base:

* The more achievements logged, the richer the questions
* Link your strongest achievements before running a simulation
* See [Achievements](/features/achievements) for how to log them

***

## General Tips

### Set a Weekly Review

Block 30 minutes weekly to:

* Log new achievements
* Update revenue tracking
* Review action items
* Check Track for overview

### Start Small, Build Over Time

Don't try to document your entire career at once:

* Start with the last 3-6 months
* Add historical achievements gradually
* Focus on impact, not volume

### Use All Features Together

The features work best as a system:

* Achievements → CV Optimizer, Business Case, Performance Review, OKR Tracker
* Revenue → Business Case, CV Optimizer, OKR Tracker
* AI Coach → Execute (action items)
* OKR Tracker → Execute (drive key results with actions)
* CV Optimizer → Interview Simulator (optimise CV, then practise)
* Interview Simulator → AI Coach (coach on weak areas the simulator found)
* All → Track (overview)

### Keep It Current

An outdated evidence base is less valuable:

* Log achievements weekly
* Track revenue quarterly
* Review goals monthly
