# Key Concepts

> Understand the core concepts behind KAM Ascend's approach to career development

Understanding these core concepts will help you get the most out of KAM Ascend.

## Evidence Base

Your **evidence base** is the foundation of everything in KAM Ascend. It's a structured record of your career achievements, revenue impact, and skills. The stronger your evidence base, the more effective your CV optimization, business cases, and coaching sessions will be.

**Components:**

* **Achievements** — Documented accomplishments with STAR format details
* **Revenue Impact** — Quantified financial contributions (direct, influenced, cost savings)
* **Skills** — Competencies linked to achievements

## STAR Format

The **STAR format** helps you structure achievements for maximum impact:

| Element       | Description                   | Example                                                               |
| ------------- | ----------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **S**ituation | The context or challenge | "Our key account was at risk of churning..." |
| **T**ask | What you needed to accomplish | "I needed to retain the account and grow revenue..." |
| **A**ction    | What you specifically did     | "I developed a strategic account plan, aligned stakeholders..."       |
| **R**esult | The measurable outcome | "Retained the account, grew revenue 23%, expanded to 2 new divisions" |

<Note>
  Focus on **Action** and **Result** — these are the most important elements. Be specific about what YOU did, not what the team did. See [Achievements](/features/achievements#star-format-guide) for a detailed guide.
</Note>

## ATS (Applicant Tracking System)

An **ATS** is software companies use to screen resumes before humans see them. KAM Ascend's CV Optimizer analyzes your resume through an ATS lens to help you pass automated screening.

**Key factors:**

* Keyword matching and density
* Formatting compatibility
* Section structure

## Pathways

The CV Optimizer classifies candidates into **pathways** based on their fit for a role:

| Pathway                 | Description                       | Verdict Color       |
| ----------------------- | --------------------------------- | ------------------- |
| **Direct Match** | Strong fit for the role | Green |
| **Promotion Candidate** | Good fit with growth potential | Blue |
| **Industry Insider** | Same industry, different role | Yellow |
| **Cross-Industry**      | Transferable skills, new industry | Red (with guidance) |

## AI Coach Personas

The AI Coach uses different **personas** based on your coaching context:

| Persona                  | Best For                                        |
| ------------------------ | ----------------------------------------------- |
| **Promotion Strategist** | Career advancement planning |
| **Negotiation Advisor** | Salary and compensation negotiations |
| **Performance Analyst** | Performance review preparation |
| **Influence Coach** | Stakeholder relationships and internal politics |
| **Career Strategist** | Role expansion and job crafting |

See [AI Coach](/features/ai-coach) for details on how personas work in sessions.

## Standard vs Focus Mode

KAM Ascend uses two interface modes:

* **Standard Mode** — The default view with sidebar navigation. Used for most features like Achievements, Revenue Tracking, and Execute.
* **Focus Mode** — A fullscreen, distraction-free view for deep work. Used for AI Coach sessions.
